Woodturning! Projects and tools and a database of all the woodturning videos on RUclips.
The Last "Last Week in Woodturning"
Yep, Last Week in Woodturning is shutting down. Had a severe Windows problem that I couldn't recover from, and had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall Windows from scratch. I've been reinstalling applications for a week now. The effort to rebuild all my infrastructure to keep my database going is too much for me, at least at the moment. But....I intend to start making real woodturning videos again soon!

Woodturning: FRANKENBOWL! Maple Burl Cap
Просмотров 10 тыс.3 года назад
This beautiful burl cap is big leaf maple. I purchased it on eBay for $25, and I think it was well worth the price. To keep the excellent texture of the top of the cap, I turned a small recess in the center of the top. Then I finished it with Watco Wiping Polyurethane. Woodturning: Sycamore - from the Big and Tall Shop
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.3 года назад
This large sycamore log is about ten months old or thereabouts. I got it from a homeowner in Rockville, MD. It's about 14 1/2" (36cm) long and 12" (30cm) in diameter. It's showing some cracks near the ends of the log, but I'll be shortening the log and hopefully that will remove the cracks. As I turn, I find more splitting inside and I reinforce those area with thin CA glue. In vain! Before I c...
Woodturning: Sideways Hollowed Maple
Просмотров 13 тыс.3 года назад
From an ambrosia maple log, I turn a medium-sized hollow form. The opening at the top is about 1 3/4" (44mm). The finish is Watco oil-base wiping varnish. During the hollowing, I use four or five different hollowing tools, including a ring tool, a hook tool, a Sorby Hollow Master, and others. Woodturning: A Bowlful of Maple
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.3 года назад
This bowl of ambrosia maple (very little ambrosia, I'm afraid) was made from a maple tree I had taken down from my backyard a couple of months ago. Due to various mistakes on my part, the bowl turned out quite a bit smaller than I had intended. It has a dyed rim on it, with a pattern cut in with a Sorby spiralling tool. This is also the first project where I've used a hook tool and a Longworth ...
Woodturning: Japanese (or Ambrosia?) Maple
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
This piece of ambrosia maple is from a tree taken down in my backyard just a few months ago. I'm turning it thin, so I won't have to dry it out. The final 11.5" (29cm) vase gets three coats of sanding sealer (to seal in the coloring) and then three coats of a water-based varnish. Woodturning: Using (and abusing) the Ring Tool
Nagyon sajnálom, hogy eltört a menetfúrója!
The german Stratos lathes better than either of these...
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
How well does that tool perform with epoxy impregnated wood?
No idea! I’ve never had any epoxy impregnated wood.
I wonder if Titebond 3 would seal better.
If I recall correctly, Titebond 3 is significantly more expensive that regular Titebond. So, being economically minded (i.e., cheap), I didn’t test it. 😃
You killed an entire tree making this😢
Your angle is to shallow. You in to increase the grind angle as shown in your picture.
thanks dude this was a good little series!
Good sense of humor, and very informative video, thanks..
To answer your question, the blank stays in the drying box until the moisture level is about the same as the ambient moisture level of a chunk of wood sitting in my shop. Or until the day to day weight loss is about 3/10 of an ounce.
@@RickTurnsWoodturning Thanks.
Good gawd. Very slow to use, and isn't this tool primarily used to hollow out end grain?
Great review. My company has been at work on a PAPR with an all in one design monocoque manifold. Our aim is a PAPR that's more accessible to the DIY crowd. When we have certification, would you be willing to give it a try to compare? Its called MicroClimate Air3.
Cool. It’s. OJ shine juice 🧃
Would this work with Gorilla glue?
Now that’s an interesting idea! I haven’t tried gorilla glue. I suspect it might be better. And I’m pretty sure it would be a lot more expensive.
На полном серьёзе занимается фигнёй детской. Мирикашки...
….you can make em ,out the wazoo…..lol . Yep.
I miss seeing your videos. You are the one that inspired me to try turning. Hope all is well
Thank you, Bip!
Denatured alcohol is not found in California, imagine that the dopes in the no fun zone (state gov.) don’t want a nice finish.
Hi Rick, where did you buy the solid brick of microcrystalline wax?
Amazon, of course! 😊 Jacquard, 1 lb. Block Microcrystalline Wax
@@RickTurnsWoodturning Thanks!!!
Here I am, six coats of regular ol' finish and it CONTINUES TO SOAK IT UP fuehebvehdhchebrhhd😂
Memory improves on a low carb diet...👍
Rick, have you any idea how abrasive paper towel is? Try what we did in the army - use an old wadded up pantyhose. But wad it up PROPERLY so that there are no loose bits sticking out.
I’ll have to try that. Thanks!
But you aren't showing us anything about microcrystalline wax - its all sorts of colours and finishes - mostly about carnuba wax. I just want to know about microcrystalline wax. Not tiny print from computers that I can't read.
I can't read that tiny print!
I'm looking for a product that won't melt and come off when I put my wooden teaspoon into my hot tea.
I don’t know what the melting point of microcrystalline wax is. I doubt that it would hold up to any really hot liquid.
2024..newbie..goal is to add this detail.
Great info thank you, have a quick question.Do you have any problem with cracking using this method?
No, it works very well.
Excellent series. I learned a lot. Thank for the hard work of making this :)
Excellent and really subjective review, thank you Really pleased to hear your comments, as I ordered one this morning to replace a really old ( and somewhat temperamental ) Record RP3000 chuck. I would really have preferred to get an SC3 as my lathe is a lightweight Record Coronet from way back with a 3/4in x 16tpi thread, but the SC3 has a fixed thread size, so not future proof , and if I do get a new lathe, it will certainly have a bigger shaft thread, probably the M33 that's on the chuck body. Record do turn out good stuff, I changed the bearings and belt on the lathe today after 30 years of use, all of which were in fact in perfect order.
Some of the ones that didn't work I think the post is long. It would lower the center of gravity and make it easier to get upon the post
Sure do miss Rick Turns
Great !!!!
Beautiful piece. It looks a lot like Aust Mallee to me.
Found this video searching about making your own renaissance wax, this is one of the few videos on microcrystalline wax Figured I’d leave a comment for support
Thank you, David.
Hey Rick! I hope you are well. Do you use the glue straight up or do you thin it at all?
I use it straight from the can. I have a friend who dilutes it 1:1 with - he reports good results.
Do you seal both ends?brush it on?
Yes indeed, both ends. I’ll also do about 1-2 inches on the surface of the cut, unless I plan to cut it into smaller blanks in the near future.
My question is about you disk for attaching a bowl to remove tenon how did you make it
I think you’re referring to my “really big faceplate”. I used mdf, use out a huge circular piece on the bandsaw, mounted a small faceplate on the back, turned it round on the lathe, then covered the surface with a soft drawer liner.
Sure do miss your videos. Can’t wait to see you turn again.
Looks like this off set tool rest would be good on gap bed lathes when turning a platter or thin item especially using a faceplate
Very neat and cute. I have one question. What kind of wire did you use. Thanks
Have you thought about using epoxy to hold the shot in place?
Sounds like a great idea! It’s been a while since I made that, I don’t really remember now what I might have considered.
Anyone ever leave logs outside to sit on ? Do you treat them . Mine are in a grass area
Even if you double or triple seal the ends, a log left outdoors won't last very long without developing some splits. If you're leaving them outside for sitting, I'd say don't bother sealing them.
Thanks for the video I've been looking for something better to try on the end of logs before I sawmill them I have a beautiful white oak log that I want a quarter saw and I don't want the boards cracking and checking.
You had the bar in the center hole of the lathe not the three Jaw Chuck. You need to progressively cut and back off on the thread tapper to clear the tool and prevent the bit jamming Rather basic I think.
thank you for the video. Question about boiled vs. unboiled linseed oil. I prefer the unboiled, as does my friend John< He's a pro, I am not. Are there any specific reasons why one would prefer one over the other, or is it just personal preference. I prefer the way unboiled cures.
I’ve never used unboiled linseed oil. What I’ve read about is that it never dries. Sounds like you’re getting better results than that.
thanks for responding. The big fear of oily rags, this is it, , , it does polymerize, and that is what causes spontaneous combustion. I takes forever to dry, it does eventually cure. I concocted a multi-ingredient finish which included unboiled linseed, bees wax, and shellac that took 3 weeks to harden, that was 8 years ago, and it still looks fine, and is quite resistant to water and other everyday use ( it is a saya I made for my guyoto). so it is exposed to relatively adverse conditions@@RickTurnsWoodturning
Miss you Rick.
What has become of you??
I’ve fallen off the edge of the world😀 Dn’r know why, but I think I’m losing interest in woodturning. Haven’t been at my lathe in two years. I’m hoping I’ll get my woodturning mojo back sometime.
Miss seeing your videos. Really miss the humor. Hope all is well with you.
Hope you are doing well. BTW, I purchased a couple of spindle adapters to accommodate some of my 1” chucks. They didn’t run true. Decided to put a nylon washer that came with my Nova chuck between the adapter and the spindle and that corrected the problem. Happy about it but have you heard of such before?
Sounds amazing to me! Cool!
Hi Rick, thank you for this idea. I'm gonna try it. Thanks, Dan
I knew I forgot to do something, got a chunk of a trunk that now cracked up. And I have a gallon of wood glue just sitting right next to it. Damn. Thanks for the tip going forward
